INTERVIEW : HUMBERTO LEON AND CAROL LIM OF OPENING CEREMONY
As we mentioned, and you probably already know, Opening Ceremony at Ace Hotel New York (who just had a nice article in the New York Times yesterday) will be staging a French flea market with their friends, collaborators, and favorite designers in the lobby during Fashion’s Night Out, September 10th. We were able to have a quick chat with Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, currently hailing from Tokyo (and pictured above in Ace-exclusive berets), about the open air market to end all open air markets (except it’s in our lobby).
Hi, Carol and Humberto. We’re excited about OC’s French flea market at Ace New York. Ace and Opening Ceremony have some things in common, among them our love of collaboration. This seems like the perfect showcase for all the fun work you do with friends. What inspired you? Because this year’s country collaboration at Opening Ceremony is USA v. France, we wanted to incorporate a French theme in our Fashion’s Night Out concept. What better way to feature our French collaborations and designers than at a flea market, styled after the famous Parisian market Les Puces de Saint-Ouen? At a traditional bazaar, you can find a miscellany of interesting and often one-of-a-kind items at great bargains. We want to offer the same to those attending our Fashion’s Night Out event.  What are some of the things you’re most excited to see?Our flea market will feature some of the most creative individuals in the fashion industry, so we’re looking forward to see how they decorate their booths. Several designers will also be offering one-of-a-kind items for sale, whether runway pieces that are not in production or vintage pieces from their archives, so we’re very excited to see what will be offered. Are you volunteering to man any booths? You’ll find us working at one booth or another throughout the night — and you’ll definitely see us at Opening Ceremony’s own booth! Will you be wearing berets? We may. Regardless, you can be sure we will take advantage of this year’s French theme. C’est la mode!

Oui, oui, wee! Fashion Week in NYC is happening very soon, and already you can sense how big of a deal it is with all of the marquees, mannequins and signs posted all over. You can hear the seams being cut as the city prepares, and while I’ve mapped out some of the sites worth visiting, I find myself passing on the likes of a Wintour appearance, just so I can check out the flea market at the Ace Hotel avec Opening Ceremony. Nothing attracts me more than the French and Fashion — pair that up with my one of my favourite stores, and you will find me there, beret and all!
